Artificial turf is on the way to Vernon ISD's football field.

In a 6 to 1 vote the long debated issue of installing artificial turf was decided.

Vernon ISD Superintendent Tom Woody says Emory Byars offered the only dissenting vote.

School officials say stage 4 water restrictions are taking a toll on the field making them hazardous for students to play on.

Woody estimates the total cost for the field will be just over one million dollars.
