Police have released the identity of the man killed Wednesday night in an officer-involved shooting and the officer has been placed on leave pending an internal investigation.
Officials say a Wichita Falls police officer fatally shot a 22-year-old man after he would not put his weapon down.
Police say that man is Joshua Powell of Wichita Falls.
Police responded to the 2000 block of Gloria Lane around 6:30 Wednesday night after reports of a family disturbance. Officials say Officer Stephen Ginger was the only officer on scene when he saw Powell was holding a weapon.
Police say Officer Ginger told him to drop the weapon, and when he didn't comply, he shot him.
"The officer did discharge his firearm and struck the subject, immediately notified first responders who arrived quickly to the scene and they attempted medical attention to the deceased person, Sergeant John Spragins said.
First responders were not able to revive Powell and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
