Vietnam Memorial Could Go Up at Lake Wichita

WICHITA FALLS, TX - Judie Brunson is the first vice regent of the local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter -- and her husband is a Vietnam Veteran.

So a possible bronze statue -- honoring and remembering Vietnam Veterans, going up next to a future revitalized Lake Wichita -- would mean so much to her and her family.

"And can you just imagine when this is up. The tears are probably going to flow and I'm probably going to cry now, but to honor these warriors. That finally they are going to get the honor that they deserve and you know, they are dying out. They are getting older," Brunson said.

DAR members will ask city leaders' permission on Tuesday to place the sculpture on lake property -- and with the blessing of the Lake Wichita Revitalization Committee.

"And to have an opportunity to partner with someone else who has their own passion about their own product and put those two things together so that we can get more public awareness about the lake project," Lake Wichita Revitalization Committee Chairman, Stephen Garner, said. "We can have a great opportunity for the daughters of the American Revolution to have a place for people to come and see the Vietnam War memorial."

In 2015, the idea of a Vietnam memorial in Wichita Falls came to life -- and member Shirley King designed the concept of the future 11-foot tall bronze sculpture.

It would be created by Wichita Falls native, Garland Weeks, and depict a military man and female nurse.

"They are going to be standing and holding a tri-colored flag and they are going to be looking down -- as if they are looking into a fallen soldier's grave," Brunson said.

So why Lake Wichita?

"There's so many military members here for one thing and there are so many Vietnam Veterans that have retired here," Brunson said.

Of the $170,000 price tag -- the DAR still needs $25,000 to bring the memorial to life.
