Walters Mother and Son Arrested for Child Neglect
A mother and son from Walters are in the Cotton County Jail following an investigation of child abuse.
Mary Seybold and her son William "Mikey" Seybold are each charged with one felony count of Enabling Child Neglect and now a child is in the state of Oklahoma's protective custody.
According to Cotton County Under Sheriff David Johnston, about two weeks ago, the sheriff's office and the Oklahoma Department of Human Services responded to a child welfare call at the Seybold's home in rural Walters.
"When deputies and DHS arrived at the residence, the child, one child was removed from the residence," Johnston says.
Media reports indicate the child was left alone with a mentally challenged adult, and there was trash, feces and unsanitary conditions throughout the house.
Johnston says after an investigation and reports were forwarded to the district attorney, two felony warrants were issued for Mary and "Mikey".
The Seybolds were arrested at their home on Tuesday evening.
Johnston says it is crucial for anyone who has any information on any child abuse case to contact their local authorities.
"Oh it's absolutely imperative. We can't be everywhere and see everything. If people know something or they see something, they suspect something, they need to call us," Johnston says.
Oklahoma DHS officials did confirm they have a child in protective custody.
Authorities would not release the age and sex of the child but Johnston says Mary is the child's foster parent.
Johnston says Mary's bond has been set at $20,000 and "Mikey's" bond is pending.
Also, in July of 2006, two young foster children in her care, girls ages 6 and 5, died after getting into a hot van at her home in Cache. Seybold told authorities she left the children with her 15-year-old son and they were watching television when she left.
When she came back, she says she found Karina and Kianna in the van, dead. She also lost a four-year-old son before that. She says he died in a drunk driving accident. No charges were filed in the cache case.
