Sheriff's officials say his body was discovered around 9:30 a.m. by a man taking his boat to Buffalo Lake which is just outside of Iowa Park between Burnett Ranch and Vanhorn Roads.
Wichita County Sheriff David Duke says the victim victim is 51 year old Russell Shawver of Wichita County.
He says Shawver's wife told him that Shawver went fishing yesterday to take advantage of the nice weather and planned to spend the night before returning home sometime today.
But tragically, his body was found this morning in the shallow waters of Buffalo Lake.
Only law enforcement officials were allowed to continue on Vanhorn Road this morning near Iowa Park.
It leads to Buffalo Lake where Wichita County sheriff's deputies responded to a "check welfare" call just before 10 a.m. but officials at after arriving the case turned into the recovery of the body of 51 year old Russell Shawver.
Although Buffalo Lake is secluded, Sheriff's officials tell me it's pretty popular for boating and fishing. They also say it can be very difficult getting to.
The dirt road is rough, long and winding but eventually leads to the lake where sheriff's officials say another man, seen here driving away with his boat, spotted the body face down in the water not far from the bank.
"He was wearing a heavy coat and sweater and heavy clothes. He did have a life jacket on but we do believe the hypothermia took him over before he could get to the bank and he was about 20 yards from the bank.
It appears he probably flipped his little boat over in the lake and was walking it back out from the water. Lake Buffalo is shallow than what it generally is where he was. He was probably at least in waist deep, maybe chest deep water to walk himself out. No evidence of foul play. Just a tragic, tragic incident that's happened and we really feel for the family," says Sheriff Duke.
Sheriff Duke says Shawver appeared to be in the water a few hours before he was found but he says an autopsy will provide that information as well what actually caused the his death.
