WEB EXTRA: MSU Student Organizes 'Run for a Reason' 5K

We have all heard of 5k's that benefit an organization, but one is giving you a reason that has a very personal touch. Kelsey Berg, a student at MSU was inspired by the idea after the Boston Marathon bombings, she wanted to let participants run for Boston and for themselves.

Kelsey Berg is an avid runner who participants in local 5k's almost every weekend.

"Well, me personally I run to be healthy, and I just enjoy the atmosphere at 5k's," Berg said.

But after the Boston bombings, Berg wanted to organize a run that allowed runners to choose their own cause.

And so the Run for a Reason was formed. Runners gathered at Lake Wichita Saturday morning for the inaugural event.

Instead of running for one certain cause, the runners were encouraged to write their own personal reason for running.
From running for fun to running for veterans.

"Watching the news one day and I saw everything that was happening with Boston, and that's really what inspired me to do it, something just said you need to do it, and host a 5k and do it for free," Berg explained.

Runners weren't asked to pay a fee to participate, instead they were asked to give a donation of how much they thought was appropriate.

"The donations are going to The One Fund Boston, Which is the biggest group that has come together to help support what happened in Boston at the marathon, So I did my research, I thought about American Red Cross, contacted a lot of people, and that's the one we landed on, and that's the one I think will most help," said Berg.

All donations are going to One Fund Boston. Kelsey hopes that this run can become and annual event that lets the community remember the victims in Boston and give them a reason to run.

Kelsey says the event's eight volunteers and thirty runners helped raise over $350 dollars. She also says for a inaugural event it was successful.
