WFISD Board Picks Name for Consolidated Barwise/Zundy Campus
Junior high students in the Wichita Falls Independent School District who will be attending the consolidated Barwise/Zundy campus where Barwise is now know the name of their new school.
The Wichita Falls ISD School Board of Trustees voted 6 to 1 to name the consolidated school Barwise Leadership Academy.
Barwise Leadership Academy was one of five names presented the board by a naming committee made up of Zundy and Barwise parents and staff.
Other names the board considered were Central Leadership Academy, Joseph A. Kemp Leadership Academy, Merle Anthony Leadership Academy and Wichita Falls Leadership Academy.
In a straw poll among committee members, Joseph A. Kemp Leadership Academy got the most votes.
WFISD School Board Vice President Trey Sralla was the only dissenting vote because he says he wanted to go with the name that got the most votes from the committee.
Board members who voted in favor of the Barwise name say they didn't want to remove the name of a founding father and changing the name would cost the district extra money.
All members did agree on adding "leadership academy" to the name of the school.
Executive Director of WFISD's School Administration Debby Patterson says Zundy was an academy and it offered specialized courses that will transfer over to the new Barwise Leadership Academy.
"That leadership academy is already a part of Zundy and that was a program and something that they were trying to bring over because that was trying to pull the best of all the best. They wanted to be sure that that was added over there," Patterson says.
When it comes to the mascot and colors of the new Barwise Leadership Academy, the board says it's not in their policy to decide that.
They say they're going to leave that up to the school.
Consolidated students from Alamo and Sam Houston Elementary Schools attending school at the Zundy site can look forward to sporting purple and gold school colors after a separate committee voted to keep the Zundy name.
Zundy Elementary School will also keep its eagle mascot.
