WFISD Career and Technology students from Carrigan Career Center and Hirschi High School made a very strong showing at the SkillsUSA District Meet held in Waco the weekend of February 22-23, 2013. Students from all WFISD high schools participate in these classes. SkillsUSA is an international organization for career and technical students, and sponsors competitions at the district, state, national, and world level.
From the Automotive Technology class, winners include Blake Thornton, Rider High School, 1st place, Automotive Service Technology and 1st place, Motorcycle Service Technology; Sean Hammonds, RHS, 1st place, Diesel Equipment Technology; and Trey Smith, RHS, 2nd place, Automotive Tool Identification and 3rd place, Motorcycle Service Technology. The Automotive Quiz Bowl team of Thornton; Hayden Becknal, Harrell; and Luis Madrigal, Wichita Falls High School, also won 1st place. This class is taught by Larry Krugle at Hirschi High School.
From the Collision Repair and Refinishing class taught at Carrigan by David Boller, Bobby Crawford, RHS, placed 1st in Automotive Refinishing; Vince Struve, WFHS, placed 1st in Automotive Collision Repair; and Yesenia Gonzales, WFHS, placed 2nd in Automotive Refinishing.
Construction Technology student Joshua Bates, WFHS, placed 1st in Carpentry and the team of Bates, Ernest Russell, WFHS, and Mark Vallejo, RHS, won Best of Show in Innovative Architecture and Design with their Solar Heater. This class is taught at Carrigan by Scott Little.
Welding student Jacobie Genus, RHS, placed 1st in Welding, and Jonathan Badder, WFHS, placed 2nd. The Welding Fabrication team of Dylan Morgan, Harrell; Weylin Miller, RHS; and Francisco Vasquez, WFHS, placed 2nd. A picnic table by Angel Valdez, WFHS, won Best Overall of Show. A ranch entrance gate crafted by Misty Cantwell, RHS, won Best of Show Welding General Class. A hog trap by Badder and Omar Pozos, WFHS, also qualified for state contest. Welding is taught by Stephen Davis at Carrigan.
Carrigan Cosmetology instructor Gina Strong's students swept the Cosmetology competitions. Dallas Neal, RHS, won 1st in Cosmetology and her project won Best of Show. Ebony Williams, RHS, won 1st place in Men's Hair Cutting. Abigal Dagher, WFHS, won 1st place in Nail Art; Aimee Silva, WFHS, won 1st place in Nail Care; Ceonna Rhodes, RHS, won 1st place in Hair Project. Malinda Rangel, WFHS, won 2nd place in Nail Care; and Paytn Morales, RHS, and Ceonna Rhodes placed 3rd in Extemporaneous Speech and Prepared Speech respectively.
