Wichita Falls ISD students will have access to a new language program when they return to class in the fall.

The American Federation of Teachers sponsored an informational session tonight for folks in the district to learn more about the dual language program that will incorporate English speaking and Spanish speaking students in bilingual sessions.

Students who enroll in the program must make a 6-year commitment and if they complete it, they will receive a certificate of proficiency in a second language.

The WFISD program will work to promote high academic achievement in two languages and develop cross-cultural awareness for students.

The WFISD nurtures a learning community, in which students from diverse backgrounds speak, read and write in both English and Spanish.

The two-way Dual Language Program will start with the kindergarten class at Zundy Elementary.
