Last spring the WFISD school board received a facility study master plan. Data collected showed where schools stand in terms of enrollment and how functional each campus is.
Now a school board committee is using that information to make schools more efficient.
Over the past two months a three person Facility Utilization Committee toured several campuses.
They came back with two recommendations. First they suggest consolidating Zundy and Barwise Junior High. The other is to consolidate Alamo and Sam Houston Elementary and move them to the Zundy campus.
“They are starting to get harder and harder to maintain and we want to in the future give Sam Houston and Alamo a new facility. So we are hoping that by housing them at Zundy for the time being, that will allow us to have some time to decommission the oldest schools but allow us to build a new building on the Zundy site and eventually give them a brand new building,” said Allyson Flack of the WFISD school board.
The school board plans to pay for the new facility with bond money they hope to pass in May 2014.
They say none of the consolidations would lay off WFISD employees.
The school board needs to make a final decision around the end of this calendar year. They say they would plan to implement the consolidations next school year.
