A new name and dress code is how one Wichita Falls school hopes to promote a more positive academic persona.
The idea was presented to the school board during a special session meeting Tuesday.
Washington Jackson wants to create a campus with better student learning and overall performance.
School officials hope to change the school's name from Washington Jackson Math-Science Center to Washington Jackson Academy.
They hope the new name and a dress code will aid in the school's improvement plan to foster a more academic environment.
“It gives them a different perspective. It gives them an academic focus. Rather than coming to school in their social clothes they are coming in a more focused type dress,” said Stephanie Phillips, Washington Jackson's principal.
The uniform would consist of a select group of colored collared shirts, pants, shorts and skirts.
Officials from Kirby Junior High are also seeking approval to enforce a similar uniform.
Both schools would implement these changes for the 2014- 2015 school year.
The Wichita Falls School Board must approve these items during their next meeting, Monday January 27th, at the Education Center at 6 p.m. for the changes to take affect.
