Wichita County Challenges Residents to Conserve Water

The 40 Gallon Challenge is a national campaign urging everyone, especially in the southern parts of the United States, to conserve at least 40 gallons of water per day.

Wichita County officials are encouraging residents here to take that pledge.

The average person in Texas uses between 100 to 150 gallons of water per day.

Wichita County Ag Extension Agent Fred Hall says with this challenge, everyone will be able to reduce their water consumption.

Hall says the challenge will help save water in Texoma.

"What we are asking is for citizens in each community to use this challenge as a tactile way for them to remember to do the things that help conserve water," Hall says.

Hall says it's the little things about the 40 Gallon Challenge that will go a long way.

For example, turning off the faucet while you're brushing your teeth will help save eight gallons a day.

Hall says things like not leaving the water running while rinsing dishes can save five gallons a day and running the dishwasher only when it's full can save two gallons a day.

"We're not making anymore water," Hall says. "Whether we are in a shortage or not, water conservation and being practical and being go stewards of any resource is important."

As of Wednesday, Hall says 90 households have pledged to save over 1,600 gallons of water.
Hall says water desperately needs to be conserved during this ongoing drought.

"Until we get rains that start to fill reservoirs, it's important if we want to continue to have drinking water at the faucet," Hall exclaims.

A challenge that will help keep our most valuable resource from going down the drain.
