Wichita Falls Man Featured on TLC's 'My 600-lb Life'

WICHITA FALLS - A Wichita Falls man recently featured on TLC's "My 600-lb Life," hopes his story will be the motivation someone needs.

"It was really out of desperation, really," said Doug Armstrong.

Armstrong said that's what drove him to reach out to TLC.

"It's not just me I'm living for now, I have kids and I have Ashley that I need to live for and that was the biggest motivation through the whole thing."

At 6 feet 6 inches, Armstrong has always been a big guy, but once his weight maxed out at 684 pounds, he knew it was time to take back control of life.

He said being on the show motivated him to drop 222 pounds, just 30 pounds shy of his goal.

"I started doing more with Cooper and started doing more with my family and started doing the exercising more and started looking towards those things other than the things I was turning to the most. I think that was really what a lot of people saw right towards that end of that."

And Armstrong said he also wanted to share his story of his battle with drugs and his addiction to food. And show how opening up about your problems will help you more than you know.

"I think at one point or another during this whole thing, I kept telling myself that I don't think it's necessarily me that it's going to help more than it is going to be somebody else who's  afraid to come out and say you know this is what's bothering me. I have to let this stuff go because it's not doing anybody any good."

Armstrong said being on national television was quite the experience.

"I was kind of like, this is going to be cool, you know, this is going to be on TV and all that. Once it aired, it was surreal. All the attention and all the people contacting us through Facebook and everything, it was almost overwhelming at first. We had to turn the TV off immediately after it was over and just kind of sit there and talk."

But he thanks Wichita Falls for all of their support.

"When it comes to these kinds of things, you never know what kind of feedback you're going to get. We just got a really good feedback from Wichita Falls and this community."

"It was a crazy journey and we're still in the middle of it and we'll make Wichita Falls proud."

If you missed Doug's story, it's ok! We have how you can watch it and more on his story here. You can catch TLC's "My 600-lb Life" on Wednesdays at 7 CST.
