Wichita Falls Transgender Group To Hold March

WICHITA FALLS - A Wichita Falls transgender group is getting ready to hold a march to protest Senate Bill 6 co-authored by Lt. Governor Dan Patrick last week.

He says the bill will ensure that public schools will be able to continue to determine how they accommodate students with individual needs.

The goal of tomorrow's transgender march is to inform Wichita Falls about how Senate Bill 6 will affect transgender people in Texas.

According to a statement by Lt. Governor Patrick: "SB 6 also protects private businesses from being forced by a local government to adopt any kind of restroom, locker room or shower policy and requires government buildings to continue to designate separate restrooms, locker rooms and showers for men and women. SB 6 does not discriminate against anyone. It is a common sense, privacy and public safety policy for everyone.

But Stephanie Morgan, one of the march organizers said forcing transgender people to use the bathroom of the gender that is on their birth certificate will only cause a lot of confusion.

"It's putting a lot of people's lives at risk. So tomorrow means for me getting out there and fighting for my friends and my rights and helping people understand that we're not out to hurt anybody. We're here to live our lives and be left alone."

Preparations for Saturday's march are underway. Transgender allies made signs, some reading "we don't need bathroom police" and "protect trans youth."

The march will start at 3 pm Saturday at the Wichita County Democratic Headquarters.
