Woman Battling Cancer Encourages Texomans to Volunteer for Cancer Study

- Wichita Falls resident Jackie Bush was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003.

"I underwent a mastectomy and then chemotherapy," she says. "Then in 2011, I was diagnosed again. It had come back, and it had come back in my retina and my spine."

Her cancer has now reached stage four, but she's optimistic she'll beat it as she has just two chemotheraphy treatments left.

"I have two children and my husband," Bush says. "They've been wonderful, but it's really hard for them not knowing what the outcome is going to be."

That's why she's such a big advocate for volunteers for CPS 3: the third installment of a nationwide American Cancer Society-sponsored cancer prevention study since the 1950's.

Regan Nabors with the ACS says, "Back in the 50's, during our first study, we found out that smoking causes lung cancer. You would think nowadays, why didn't they know that? Well through the study, they found out."

And with less than 30 minutes later this month, volunteers ages 30 to 65 can hopefully help end the devastation caused by this terrible disease.

"I would love to have the word cancer erased from our dictionary," Nabors says. "I would love for my children one day and their children one day to have to ask, 'What is cancer?'"

"I would love for it to result in a cure so nobody has to hear it: that they have cancer, and so that maybe, eventually they could get it out of me completely," Bush says.

If you're age 30 through 65 and you've never had cancer before, you can volunteer for the study.

It's Sunday, Nov. 24 at First United Methodist Church.

While there, you'll give a small blood sample and have a few measurements taken, and that's it!

You're done!
