League of Women Voters host councilor at large candidate forum

WICHITA FALLS - Many residents throughout Wichita Falls now have a better understanding of where the four candidates stand who are running for city councilor at large. The League of Women Voters of Wichita Falls held a candidate forum Wednesday night.

A big topic was focused on how each candidate would be accessible and connect with their constituents and each candidate also had plenty of ideas on how to build the city's economy.

One candidate is retired air force officer Penny Miller. She says she understands how vital it is to have open communication between city leaders and the community.

"I think availability, accessibility and the willingness not just to be for people to get a hold of you but to actually listen to what they have to say," Miller said.

Former Wichita Falls police officer Charles Barr says he's already been out and about in the community listening to small business owners about what they'd like to see.

"Yesterday, I talked to about a half a dozen of them," Barr said. "I just walked in and said, 'hey how you're doing? What needs to happen? Is there anything that can help?'"

Helping out is something Wichita Falls native Brendan Bell believes can be done by investing in the Wichita Falls community.

"I think that i am very accessible because I do invest in a lot of things and I invest in people. I invest in people that are excited about our city," Bell said.

Candidate Bobby Whiteley says he's had the opportunity to work all around the city to address local needs during his time with the Wichita Falls Fire Department.

"We know where to go when people have special needs that our charity accounts could take care of," Whiteley said. "So I've have the unique ability to work all over the city."

As the campaign season gets underway, all four candidates are hoping for the chance to show voters what they can offer the city before the Nov. election.
