Not many people get to celebrate their 89th birthday, But Thursday Jack Smith did and he says it is his dedication to his job that keeps him going strong in life.
Spending the day at work is not how most people would prefer celebrating their birthday but for Smith, he wouldn't have it any other way.
Working under the open sky is where he's most comfortable, which is why at 89 years young, he's still reporting for duty in the oil field.
“I'm not retired anymore, that lasted six months,” he said.
To Smith, his job isn't just what he does, it's who he is.
“Born in Burkburnett during the boom my dad worked in the oil field and so I guess I was just born into it,” he said.
He also got the call to service at the age of just 17. This veteran joined the Navy in 1943.
“I made several of the invasions on the South Pacific islands and that was my job,” Smith said.
He says he doesn't look back at his years as a Seal with fond memories, but he does cherish what he has learned about oil over all these years. And it's that passion that's kept him young at heart.
Last week Smith celebrated his birthday with his first ever birthday party, and Thursday night he'll be getting his second birthday cake.
