Year in Review: December 2013

As we wrap up our year in review series looking back at some of the memorable news stories of 2013, we bring you the final month.

Texomans began the month of December bracing for a massive winter storm. People flocked to stores to stock up on food, supplies and other essentials. A few stores shelves ran out of some necessities because the trucks couldn't get out of the metroplex.

Wichita Falls Police issued safety tips for the dangerous driving conditions. They warned drivers to slow down, but many ignored the advice, leading to dozens of wrecks. Many also fell into other old driving habits.

In Oklahoma, Jackson County authorities moved closer to solving a missing person cold case when they say 49-year-old Garland Allen led them to a remote site in Kiowa County where he said he buried his wife.

Altus Police Chief Tim Murphy said it was a team effort by detectives, a cold case TV show crew, and others that help solve what became of Tracy Allen. Though positive ID of remains found at the site would take more time, Jackson County District Attorney John Wampler was confident they would prove to be those of Tracy Allen and believed he knew part of the reason why she was killed.

Garland Allen was extradited to Jackson County from Texas and is held in the Jackson County Jail without bond.

Sixty-eight hundred fans filled AT&T Stadium as history was made for the Crowell Wildcats in their first state championship game. They took on the May Tigers in a cat fight for the 6-man division one state title. Players, coaches, and fans were excited as the Wildcats defeated the Tigers 78 to 52.

Lastly, more changes are coming for Wichita Falls grocery shoppers as a new Natural Grocers opens, and Albertson's announced it was selling its Wichita Falls store to family owned Lawrence Brothers IGA Supermarkets. Albertson's spokesperson said the Wichita Falls store would no longer operate under the Albertson's Corporation as of January 12th.
