Long time clerk Leonzo Jones was killed during a robbery at Zoom Zoom's, and police arrested two men in connection with the shooting. Family remembered Jones for the good he did in his own community and the concern he had for customers and friends.
In Duncan, residents took a stand against violence after tragic killings took promising young lives. High school students brought hope by showing everyone their roar and organized a baseball game to honor Chris Lane, the Australian college student killed in an alleged thrill killing. Authorities say the three teen suspects told them they were bored and needed something too.
Parents in Wichita Falls began a campaign to save Zundy Junior High from consolidation with Barwise Junior High. The facility utilization committee of the WFISD school board proposed a plan to consolidate Alamo and Sam Houston Elementary and move students to Zundy. Zundy Jr. High students would combine with those at Barwise. The issue would go to a school board vote, for a possible bond election.
Two local stalwarts were laid to rest in October. Joe Brown, beloved fixture of KFDX morning TV for decades, passed away at the age of 78 and legendary local sports writer Nick Gholson died at the age of 66 from cancer.
A local business, famous for hot links, got commemoration for years of service. The historical marker in front of Davenport's grocery will now serve as a reminder for the decades of support and food they have given to the community.
