Making the Grade: Pirates Take Over Ben Franklin Elementary

Franklin Elementary fourth graders run a tight ship.

They have been busy practicing for their school play "Pirates the Musical."

"I try to get in character and I practice my lines," says Vanessa Odera, who plays
a stowaway.

Libby Feathersome also plays a stowaway. "I try to practice a lot," she says.

Its an adventurous tale of two very determined stowaways

"I sneak onto the ship because I really want to be a pirate with my other stowaway Libby.
And we just it's like an adventure because we like go on but they don't want us to be a
pirate," says Odera.

Besides fun and adventure, Ethan Faulkner and the other fourth graders hope to
pass on an important lesson to their audience.

"Can't judge a book by it's cover," says Faulkner.

But, putting on a production like this can teach students valuable lessons too.

"It teaches them life skills. It teaches them team work, self esteem, confidence all of
that stuff. And also by having their families come it's a great family involvement as well,"
says Abi Parker, Franklin Elementary School music teacher.

Franklin Elementary usually puts on about six plays a year.

Two performances of "Pirates the Musical" are set for next Thursday.

One at 2:30PM for the school, and the other at seven that evening for parents.

So if you want to be a pirate these fourth graders will be happy to show you the ropes.
