Making the Grade WFISD Contestv Winners

Several WFISD students are receiving both state and national recognition in their extra curricular activities.
Students from the Carrigan Career Center and Hirchi High School attended the Skills USA Contest in Corpus Christi.
And now one of those students is  strapping on his tool belt and preparing to hammer his way to the national competition in Kansas City, Missouri.
Eddie Randle has more in Tonight's Making the Grade.

I want to build houses and big skyscrapers.

And Antonio Mata is well on his way to accomplishing that goal.
The Hirschi High School senior has been working in the Construction Technologies class at Carrigan for the past two years and  plans on building on those skills to create a career.
Antonio received district recognition in Waco earlier this year and then received first place at the state competition for building a section of house in a six hour window with three minutes to spare.

A floor with a wall section with a door and window frame and a slanted roof with rafters and stairs.

Now he plans to put his experience to use to build entire homes and buildings.

I plan on going to TSTC in Waco for two years and from there my credits will transfer to UTA and I'll finish my associates degree in Architecture.

But right now Antonio is getting ready for nationals in Kansas City.
And he says he not sure what his task will be.

Im going in there blind. I dont know what to expect my teacher hasnt been there. Its my first time and his.

Antonio says he would have never gotten this far without the encouragement  and support of his father.

My dad talked me into it. At first I didn't plan on coming to Carrigan but I stuck it through and look where its got me now. Im ranked number one carpentry in TX. That's unbelieveable, all can do is thank God.
