(NBC News) The streets of Ferguson, Missouri exploded with violence again Monday night, smoke and tear gas filling the air as police and protesters clashed.

Rocks and bottles were thrown at officers along the front lines. 31 people were arrested during the chaos, including a group inside a pick-up truck where police found what appeared to be a Molotov cocktail.

Captain Ron Johnson, the Missouri State Highway Patrol officer in charge of security in Ferguson, says that outside "criminal elements" are responsible for the violence.

Johnson called on the people of Ferguson to stand together, and says he is confident order can be restored.

"We're going to solve this together," Johnson said. "I'm not going to let criminals define our neighborhood."
