Carolina Residents and Tourists Prepare for Hurricane Authur

- Residents and vacationers along the eastern seaboard are preparing for what could be a long and dangerous Fourth of July weekend. Now Hurricane Arthur is gaining momentum and pushing toward the coastline right now. The Carolina Outer Banks could take the hardest hit. NBC's Jay Gray is in Kill Devil Hills with the latest.

Concerns continue to grow right now all along the east coast, "We're trying to evacuate as many people off the island as we can for their safety due to the storm that's coming later on today."

Arthur, Now a category one hurricane is taking aim at the Carolina Outer Banks. Just a few hundred miles from the shoreline, and moving in at the worst possible time for thousands who had planned to spend the Fourth of July holiday on Hatteras island. "With family you have to evacuate hopefully the road is not going to be washed out and we can be back as soon as possible."

The current forecast track shows the storm brushing much of the coast over the next few days, with North Carolina's barrier islands taking the earliest and likely most severe hit. "The rain and wind effects are expected to start being felt in the Wilmington area early afternoon with the outer bands of the storm expected to reach the Outer Banks by mid afternoon."

Conditions are expected to continue to deteriorate through the night. Still many are hopeful the holiday weekend won't be a complete wash-out. "Let's hope for the best, lets pray for the best, that Arthur clears out quickly so we can all get back to celebrating our country's independence with our friends and families on North Carolinas beautiful beaches."

Beaches that are beginning to clear out right now. Preparing for the "fireworks" that Arthur could deliver.

Emergency managers say the time to move to higher ground is quickly running out. Conditions could begin to deteriorate here in the next couple of hours.
