Cease-Fire Deal Gets Hung Up

Secretary of State John Kerry said Friday that talks aimed at a seven-day humanitarian cease-fire in the Gaza Strip are bogged down in disagreement over "some terminology" but he expressed confidence that Hamas and Israel will come to terms. "None of us here is stopping," Kerry said in Cairo. He said he believes both sides are committed to finding a solution.

The devastating fighting has left 836 dead in Gaza, including many civilians. Thirty-four Israelis, including 32 soldiers, and a Thai worker have also been killed since the beginning of the operation. "It's time for everyone to recognize that violence breeds violence and the short-term tactical gains...will not inspire the long-term change that is necessary and that both parties really want."
