(NBC News) A House committee has issued subpoenas for the e-mails of Secretary of Veteran Affairs Eric Shinseki as anger over delays in care at hospitals grows.

Lawmakers want to find out what top V.A. officials knew about dangerous delays in medical care at one Arizona hospital that has been linked to 40 deaths, as well as reported problems at other hospitals across the country.

"If these allegations are true, you know, I'd be entirely upset," Shinseki says. "And I will do something about it."

Some lawmakers are calling for Shinseki's resignation, but House Speaker John Boehner says the problem is bigger than one man and a backlog.

"It's the preventable deaths that have occurred within their system," Boehner notes. "There is a systemic management issue."
