FDA Tackles Teen Smoking in New Ad

(NBC News) Most teenage smokers aren't worried about long-term consequences like heart disease or lung cancer.

That's why the Food and Drug Administration's new anti-tobacco campaign hits teens where it hurts: The possibility of looking ugly.

The FDA's "Real Cost" campaign aims to deter youth smoking and highlights tobacco's effect on appearance: Wrinkled skin, damaged and yellow teeth.

"Our youth are at risk. Every day, some 3,200 kids try smoking for the first time, and 700 kids go on to become committed smokers every day," points out FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg.
