(WOOD) Authorities around the nation are looking for a convicted murderer who escaped from Michigan's Ionia Correctional Facility Sunday night.

Michael David Elliot, 40, is described as a 5-foot-8, 165-pound, white male with brown hair and eyes.

Elliot allegedly carjacked and abducted a woman after his escape.

Michigan State Police said the woman was leaving a residence and Elliot approached her with a box cutter and told her that he had an emergency. Elliot got in the back seat of the woman's Jeep Liberty, and told her that he wanted to get as far away from Michigan as possible.

The woman drove for more than two hours to Elkhart County, Indiana, where they stopped for gas.

He was wearing a blue and orange state prison uniform when he escaped, but was last seen in black pants, a white T-shirt and a blue, hooded sweatshirt at a gas station in Indiana.
