Only 74,000 jobs were added in December, far below the average gain of over 200,000 jobs a month in preceding four months.
The unemployment rate fell slightly from November's 7 percent to 6.7 percent last month, but analysts say that's because more people stopped looking for work.
Many industries posted weak gains and some even cut jobs.
Transportation, warehousing, and even the government cut jobs in December.
