(NBC News) The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Tuesday the military "will not ignore" accusations from a growing group of fellow soldiers that Bowe Bergdahl's misconduct led to his being held by the Taliban until he was swapped for top terrorist detainees.

As Bergdahl recovers and the controversy surrounding the prisoner swap that set him free rages, the Pentagon confirms an inquiry into the charge Bergdahl went AWOL or deserted in 2009.

Several fellow soldiers are speaking out, claiming that Bergdahl is to blame for the death of comrades who perished while searching for him.

Meanwhile, President Obama defended the prisoner swap, saying we don't leave Americans in uniform behind.

"Whatever those circumstances may turn out to be, we still get an American soldier back if he's held in captivity. Period. Full stop," Mr. Obama said.
