President Obama will give up 5% percent of his salary in solidarity with federal workers facing furloughs due to mandatory spending cuts.

The voluntary move will be retroactive to March 1st, when the sequester cuts began, and last through the end of the year.

The salary for the president and members of congress is set by law and can't be changed.

So, the president will have to write the checks back to the treasury to lower his salary.

The president is paid $400,000 a year and 5% of his salary over 10 months equals just shy of $17,000.
