Report Finds Americans Have Unhealthy Drinking Habits

(NBC News) Alcohol is the subject of a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"There are at least 38 million Americans who have problems with alcohol," notes CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden.

Those problems go beyond alcoholism.

The CDC defines heavy alcohol use as an average of more than two drinks a day for men and a daily average of more than one for women.

Imbibing too much can do more than leave you with a nasty headache the next day.

"Alcohol causes more health and social problems than most people recognize," Dr. Frieden say.

Over time heavy drinking can lead to heart disease, liver problems and breast cancer.

While most physicians screen their patients for other risky issues, like cholesterol and blood pressure, few discuss alcohol.
