PK Fires Update

Two separate fires have been burning near Possom Kingdom Lake since last week.

The Dark Valley Fire remains at about 70% containment.

The Rhodes Ranch Fire at about 60%.

The two fires have burned about 3300 acres in all.

Around 14 fire departments from around the State have answered the call to help, along with 4 military helicopters and two strike teams on the ground; all working toward the same goal.

Trooper Lonny Haschel with DPS said protecting life and property are the primary concerns, "Life of the fire fighters especially because it's hot out here. Those guys are out there in that gear, crawling through areas coming up as hot spots."

Keeping everyone safe can be a difficult task in any fire, but given the rough terrain, that's easier said than done.

Scattered puffs of smoke on hillsides show evidence of where winds have stirred up ash and dropped it in the dry areas.

Officials said because of the high heat and low humidity levels, when that ash lands, fires can spark in an instant.

"Mother nature is who we're working with here," said Haschel, "and we have to try and anticipate what the winds will do."

Blowing winds and rough terrain.

It sounds all too familiar for an area still rebuilding after last year's devastating fires.

Officials said they are aware of the community's concerns, and are doing their best to get the fires out.

"The goal is to keep a disaster from happening," said Haschel, "Keep everybody as safe as we can, including our employees and the volunteer folks."

Volunteers who are sacrificing their own time, to save their neighbors homes.
