EVERY SPRING AVID READERS CONVERGE ON THE WICHITA ADULT LITERACY COUNCIL BOOK FAIR.
AND TO MAKE SURE THE SALE GOES OFF WITHOUT A HITCH ONE MAN DONATES COUNTLESS HOURS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
FOR HIS DEDICATION MIKE PAYNE IS THIS MONTH'S SPIRIT OF TEXOMA AWARD WINNER.
FIFTY THOUSAND BOOKS TO BE SORTED AND SET OUT FOR HUNDREDS OF BROWSERS EACH YEAR ... MEET THE MAN RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING THEM HERE.
FOR THE LAST 4 YEARS MIKE PAYNE HAS DONATED LONG HOURS SO THE WICHITA ADULT LITERACY COUNCIL CAN CONTINUE ITS MISSION...AND OVER TIME HE HAS COME UP WITH MORE EFFICIENT WAYS TO GET THE BOOKS IN PLACE FOR ALL THE LITERATURE LOVERS TO SEE.
We have got this down to 50 thousand books being put in place in less than one hour.
THROUGH HIS WORK WITH THE LITERACY COUNCIL MIKE HAS SEEN FIRST HAND HOW TEACHING SOMEONE TO READ TRULY CHANGES LIVES.
I have seen adults actually learn to read they can be better paid better taxpayers and a part of this community, but before they were quite ashamed of themselves and couldn't even admit they couldn't do these things.
AND MIKE SAYS HE HAS HELP FROM SOME SPECIAL VOLUNTEERS ALONG THE WAY.
One of the neatest things I get to do is work with the special needs men and women who help me do these things and without them and all the people who help them I couldn't do anything.
MIKE HELPS FOLKS TURN A NEW PAGE IN THEIR LIVES THROUGH MORE THAN JUST HIS WORK AT THE LITERACY COUNCIL.
HE ALSO COLLECTS GROCERIES TO STOCK THE SHELVES AT THE INTERFAITH MINISTRIES FOOD PANTRY AND HELPS COLLECT COINS FOR THE PENNIES FOR PRESCRIPTION PROGRAM THE AGENCY RUNS.
HE'S ALSO INVOLVED WITH THE CHRISTIAN WOMEN'S AND MEN'S JOB CORP PROGRAMS.
All nonprofits in town need people, you know older people younger people if you have the time do it. They would love to have you for two hours a week, they would love to have you for 10 hours a day they will take you any way they can get you.
AND HE SAYS THERE IS A TRUE PAYOFF IN WHAT YOU GET FROM GIVING BACK.
It's just a warm warm feeling it is incredible. To be able to do something for somebody else, there is just no other better payment.
THE BOOKS HE HELPS SELL AT JUST FIFTY CENTS TO A DOLLAR ARE A BARGAIN FOR READERS...BUT MIKE'S HARD WORK FOR THE LITERACY COUNCIL IS ANOTHER PRICELESS EXAMPLE OF THE SPIRIT OF TEXOMA.
MIKE IS CURRENTLY GEARING UP FOR THIS YEAR'S LITERACY COUNCIL SPELLING BEE WHICH IS SET FOR NOVEMBER 10TH AT THE WOMAN'S FORUM.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HAVING A TEAM OR SPONSORING AN ABC FOR LITERACY CALL THE COUNCIL AT 767- 5257.
OWENS AND BRUMLEY FUNERAL HOMES CONGRATULATE MIKE ON HIS AWARD FOR HELPING MANY ORGANIZATIONS IN OUR COMMUNITY...
AND IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS TRULY MAKING A DIFFERENCE NOMINATE THEM NOW.
