In the next few days students will see a change in the school lunch program.

In the spring, the USDA announced a new meal pattern for the national school lunch and breakfast programs.

So starting this year, schools are required to provide students with a more nutritionally balanced meal.

"We have to offer a protein, a milk a vegetable, fruit and grain. We have always done that in the past but this year, the kids, for them to come through and get a reimbursable meal, they will have to pick up a fruit or a vegetable," says Kathy Bolton, WFISD director of food service.

The cost of the school lunch program will also see a change this year.

Kathy Bolton says the daily cost for lunch in secondary schools will increase 10 cents to $2.40 and 25 cents in elementary schools to $2.25.

Bolton says the cost for the reduced lunch program will remain the same; 40 cents.
