SOME OF HIS ART GRACES THE MSU CAMPUS...SUCH AS THE SUNWATCHER STATUE AND THE MUSTANGS...
OTHER PIECES PAY TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES...SUCH AS THE BOBCAT AND KITTEN AT BARWISE.
YOU CAN SEE THE WORK OF JACK STEVENS ALL OVER TEXOMA...AND EVEN HALF A WORLD AWAY.
WE INTRODUCE YOU TO THE MAN BEHIND THE ART...WITH THIS MONTH'S SPIRIT OF TEXOMA AWARD.
This is the last bare back horse I rode, just before I went in the Army.
29th Army infantry third armored division...driving a truck in Germany...all my plans were shot.
OR AT LEAST THAT'S WHAT JACK THOUGHT...UNTIL HE GOT A GLIMPSE OF THE BIGGER PICTURE.
I had to go to Italy a few times to take some things and I wrote Dub back and said I found the biggest hay barn, you can't grow enough hay to put in this building but it had paintings all over the ceiling...I'd never heard of the Sistine Chapel.
THE INSPIRATION JACK GOT FROM THE MASTERPIECES HE SAW IN EUROPE WOULD REMAIN WITH HIM FOREVER, AND THE CREATIVE SPIRIT WOULD FIND A NEW HOME IN HIS LITTLE SHOP IN TEXOMA.
Then started doing my art work then I could visualize those that real art work I saw in Italy and Germany, the ones that wasn't bombed out. That makes me proud that God allowed me to be there, he was working something out.
HIS LATEST PIECE IS INSPIRED BY THE BIBLE...DEPICTING JESUS BEING TAKEN FROM THE CROSS...THE FINE DETAIL IN THE CROWN OF THORNS...THE NAIL IN HIS HAND...EACH SMALL DETAIL IS PART OF SCULPTURE AFTER SCULPTURE...SOME LARGER THAN LIFE.
LIKE HIS LATEST WORK TITLED "THE BELIEVERS" AT MSU...THE MUSTANGS SYMBOLIZE WISDOM, COURAGE AND STRENGTH.
I've got three pieces of artwork on the college campus...I cannot believe it.
PERHAPS HIS MOST FAMOUS WORK TELLS THE STORY OF HOW A CITY GOT ITS NAME....THE WEE-CHI-TA STATUE DEPICTS A COMANCHE FAMILY CROSSING A "WAIST DEEP" RIVER.
AND HIS WORK GOES FAR BEYOND TEXOMA...BUYERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD ARE INTERESTED IN WHAT JACK CREATES IN HIS STUDIO.
I always shutter when someone calls me an artist I never intended to do that.
BUT FOR THE LAST FORTY YEARS THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT JACK HAS DONE...CALLING ON INSPIRATION AND EXPERIENCES FROM YEARS AND YEARS AGO.
If I hadn't worked on all those different ranches and rode all those different horses and and all those different bucking horses or bulls at rodeos I wouldn't know how to put it in the artwork...and that goes in the art work.
YOU ALSO OFTEN FIND THE SPIRIT OF TEXOMA IN HIS WORK ...BECAUSE JACK STEVENS TRULY HAS IT.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE SOME OF HIS WORK YOURSELF JACK INVITES YOU OUT ANYTIME.
JUST GIVE HIM A CALL AT 438-2330.
