May the 40th Be With You -- "Star Wars" fan are celebrating 40 years since the first movie opened in theaters.

On May 25th, 1977  "Star Wars Episode Four - A New Hope" opened in just 42-theaters nationwide -- creating a cultural phenomenon that is still going strong.

The film, which starred relative unknowns at the time, was such a success it went on to play in theaters for over a year.

The Jedi, droids, lightsabers, Darth Vader, and blasters all became part of pop culture.
Vanity Fair Magazine is marking the anniversary by putting the cast of the upcoming 'star wars movie on their cover.

Star Wars creator George Lucas held a celebration last month where cast members Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill shared their star wars memories.

"Well, it's amazing. It was amazing at the beginning when it became a hit and it's been amazing as we've gone through the years. The fans have always been there for forty years and there weren't films every year but there have been fan conventions that kept it alive and it's pretty amazing." George Lucas, Star Wars creator

Carrie Fisher died the last  December -- but is in the upcoming movie " Star Wars: The Last Jedi" -- reprising her role as Princess Leia.
