Texas Railroad Commission Chairman Speaks in Wichita Falls

Members of the Wichita County Republican Women got energized on the topic of energy independence.

Texas Railroad Commission Chairman Barry Smitherman spoke to organization members as he campaigns for re-election.

His focus was on energy; a topic that fuels frustration with drivers who are paying nearly $4a gallon for regular unleaded.

But Smitherman says this country could be close to energy independence if politicians would be more open to what domestic oil producers need to find and pump more oil.

"Right now, a lot of our gasoline is refined from imported crude and the price of that is more expensive than the crude that we produce here in Texas. So, more Texas production would drive down gasoline prices," said Smitherman.

Smitherman also says if President Obama would give the Keystone XL pipeline the green light that would bring bring about 900,000 gallons of crude oil each day into Texas to be refined and help make gas cheaper.
