Update on Fatal Fire near Electra

According to Sheriff David Duke, the fire sparked shortly before two Sunday afternoon at a home in the 7000 Block of Midway Church Road.

Monday morning, fire investigators with the Sheriff's Office were still on scene collecting evidence.

Sheriff Duke said an elderly man was able to get out of the house, however one person died in the flames.

"We're very fortunate this isn't a double fatality," said Duke, "Unfortunately for the victim inside, they were in the location where the fire started at, and they couldn't go out.

"It's pretty sad it occurred like that," Duke continued, "It's a horrible way to lose somebody in your family."

Duke said the victim's body was burned beyond recognition, and was sent to Tarrant County for autopsy.

As far as the man who escaped the blaze, Sheriff Duke said he was taken to Electra Memorial Hospital for treatment and released.

Sheriff duke said his office has interviewed that man twice, as investigators try and piece together what exactly happened.

The sheriff said he does have a working theory, but wants to make sure all the facts are in before going public with that information.

"We don't want to release anything prematurely to give an allocation of 'maybe this could have been the problem'," Duke explained. "We want to know exactly what the problem was and what happened so the family will have some resolve of what happened to their family member."

Sheriff Duke said even though the body was sent to Tarrant County Sunday for autopsy, it will most likely be Tuesday before it's performed.
