The family of a young Olney mother killed in a house fire early Friday morning is asking for the community's help laying her to rest.
According to Olney Police Chief Barry Roberts, 23-year-old Jessica Blackburn, her boyfriend, their 15-month-old son and her uncle were using a wood burning stove to stay warm.
Roberts says the family used too much wood and a fire sparked filling the house with smoke.
Roberts says the uncle grabbed the boy and went out a back door.
Also, Roberts says Blackburn and her boyfriend tried going out the front of the home and according to the boyfriend, Blackburn pulled away screaming for her child.
The home was engulfed within minutes and Blackburn was killed.
Roberts says this tragic accident serves as a reminder of the importance of having an emergency plan set.
"Families should have planned evacuations ideas, 'Who is going to do what', 'Who is going to pick up what' and 'Where they're going to go' and have a meeting place outside the home," Roberts says.
If you would like to help with Blackburn's funeral arrangements, donations can be at the Lunn's Funeral Home in Olney.
Lunn's is located on 300 South Avenue M, Olney, TX 76374.
They can also be reached by calling 940.564.5533.
