Athletic Advantage: Bicycling Injuries

The annual Hotter 'n Hell Hundred is just over a week away and although it's too late to train for an endurance ride it's never too late to hop on a bike for exercise.
"They've got to be able to withstand and endure the demands they are going to put on themselves and they've got to train for that. Be well-rested, well-hydrated and also eat a good meal," says United Regional athletic trainer Jeremy Woodward.  

Physicians will  mend broken bones, head injuries, but the most common reason for a visit will be overuse injuries.

"If you ride a bike with a factory seat, a lot of times they are not very padded and very narrow. So they cause a lot of rump pain and pain in the nerve endings in your rear end," adds Woodward. "If you slouch over and in that slumped over posture for a long period of time it can cause neck and back pain. You never want to have your wrist in contact with your elbows fully extended. You want to keep your elbows bent so if you hit a bump or jolt your elbows act as a shock absorber."
