Now it is their turn. Following arguably the best season in Nocona football history, this year's team is responsible for the encore. Caleb Swofford, quarterback, said he doesn't want to look back on last year all the time, but wants this year to be different and better. Running back, John Jennings, believes that there are some big shoes to fill this season and it will be tough.
With Hayden Hill and Tate Fenoglio's graduation, 85% of the Indians offense left, as well as 13 interceptions on the defensive side of the ball. Quarterback, Caleb Swofford, and 400-yard running back John Jennings, will shoulder much of the load of replacing last seasons dynamic duo. Swofford as a senior, is back under center for the first time since his freshman year.
Coach Keck said Swofford is doing a great job so far. He is a leader and is throwing the ball well. He is running the offense how the team needs him to run it, and he couldn't be more pleased with him right now. The handful of players who do return from last seasons regional finalist team said they learned valuable lessons. Evan Embry said the team learned how to win and fight for what they wanted. What made that group so good last year, was they had the ability to change gears. If they started off having a bad day at practice, they had the ability to recognize it and fix it, said Keck.
The offensive line will sports three seniors, two returning starters, who welcome the challenge to lead the indians offensive charge. Defensively the indians allowed just 14 points per game a year ago, posting 3 shutouts. Denfensive Coordinator, Steven Grigsby, said the defense is going to be crucial to what the Indians do. There will be a lot of names that you will hear from the offensive side as well, he said.
Simply put, how will the Indians approach achieving the success they experienced last season? They say they'll do whatever it takes.
