FNF Preview: 2013 Bowie Jackrabbits

- Seven games into the season last year, the Bowie Jackrabbits were 7-and-1, flying high and feeling like nothing could get in the way of a second consecutive trip to the playoffs.Of course something did get in the way. Three straight district losses. Which left the Jackrabbits on the outside looking in. This year though Bowie players say they're back with a vengence, and ready to make it back to the playoffs once again.

Bowie head coach says one of the big things he and his team talked about in the off season is finishing the season strong, "We had high expectations last year and we didn't finish well. We want to make sure we finish a lot stronger this year and definitely get back into the playoffs."

For the Bowie Jackrabbits, the high expectations of last year are gone. And the determination of this year is here. Bowie's starting quarterback Garland McCoy comes into this year after a solid 2012 proving he's a dual threat with 300 yards and 5 TD's on the ground, to go along with 400 yards and 2 TD's in the air. McCoy saying his expectations for his team haven't changed, "We're looking to win district. I mean our district is pretty tough. But that's what we want to do and go pretty deep in the playoffs."

Another big piece on offense will be wide receiver and db Jay Ward. Ward says his timing with McCoy is becoming second nature and that this year's team is better on both sides of the ball, "Our offense looks really good. We got some new guys moved in that have helped us a lot. Garland is getting the time down with just about every receiver. He works before and after practice. He's on the field non stop with them."

Back for the Jackrabbits on defense is middle linebacker Gage Robinson who is coming off a strong year recording 58 tackles. And who Coach Stark says is ready to take over an improved defense, "Gage is somebody that has a lot of varsity experience. He's played a lot of varsity football. He's been playing since he was a sophomore. We just lost our middle linebacker that has been here for three years. Gage can step in there and do a lot of the things that the one we lost would do. But Gage brings a lot to the table he's definitely one of our leaders on this team."

Garland says he likes the makeup of this defense, "We're really big we moved a couple new kids to linebacker to add some muscle. And we're going to be big and play a 4-3. We'll try to stop a lot of the runs."

The first team to face Bowie 4-3 defense this year will be the Hirschi Huskies...The Huskies travel to Bowie on September 30th. Coach Stark says it's always a good game, "We play Hirschi almost every year at the beginning of the year. It's always a good test for both of us. They've got a lot of experience themselves. They've got a lot of kids that have played since they were freshman and sophomores on the varsity and we know we have our hands full because Coach Stater does a great job. But it will be a great test for both of us."
