FNF Preview: 2014 Petrolia Pirates

- "Riding For The Brand" and "Playing For The P" on the helmet is the feeling and calling card when it comes to Petrolia Pirates football.
That's something head coach Byron Gravitt has pushed through out the team and the school.
Bryon Gravitt, Petrolia head football coach-"I don't care what kinda of sport you are talking about. You gotta have kids who are buying into one another and play for one another and play hard for one another. That's the them and that's what we have been pushing. We try to get the people, the players and coaches to buy in."
Dane Williams, Petrolia sophomore quarterback-"Every time we go out for games. We have a sign over our door. And it goes out out our town an it involves everybody else. It gets us to play for our school."
Last season, the Pirates got off to a 3-0 start, but injures to key players hurt the team.
It lead the Pirates to a 6 game losing streak. They did end the season with a win to finish the season at 4-6.
Gravitt-"I have never have been around anything like that. We started off well, we were healthy. Then it seemed like the Collinsville game. We had four or five guys go down. We were hanging on to the very last game. And even the ones who are still playing weren't 100 percent healthy."
If the Pirates are to have success, they must avoid the injury bug.
Sophomore Dane Williams makes the move from wide receiver to quarterback.
He will be counted on to lead a team where 18 of their 34 players are freshmen.
Williams-"I think it is a big role for me as a sophomore. I think that coach Gravitt expects a lot. I just think I am going to do everything that I can. Just helping these freshmen. To help them be more comfortable with practice. Helping them adjust better."
Gravitt-"The good thing is they have experience. They were all on varsity last year. A lot of them were play makers. They just have to grow up quicker than most."
The Pirates have one big goal they want to accomplish in 2014.
Williams-"I just think to make the playoffs. It is something we haven't done in a while. That would be awesome. That is something we haven't done in a few years."
The Pirates open up the season August 29th at home against the Archer City Wildcats.
