As for the first time since 2011, the Mustangs are going to field a high school football team.
The only official football action to happen on the Benjamin High School football field over the past 3 years was done by the middle school team.
Now practices are not only for the middle school but the rebirth of the high school football program.
Jacob Navarro, Benjamin H.S. Head Football Coach-"Its real exciting. When I first got here. Everybody wanted to know when are we going to have varsity football again? I said it is coming. We are going to have it next year. The community and several families are excited because they haven't had it for a while. So the town is really excited."
Navarro and the Benjamin community aren't the only ones pumped up about the football comeback, the players are excited about putting on the helmet and pads for high school football.
Caleb Barrientez, Benjamin football player-"It's awesome. It is the first year I will get to play high school football. So, it should be fun.
Justin Rainwater, Benjamin football player-"It should be interesting. It is going to be fun."
Even though they haven't played a high school game, this year's team is used to winning.
A lot of the team is made of members from last year's middle school squad that went 6-2.
Coach Navarro says that team easily could have been 8-0.
Jacob Navarro, Benjamin H.S. Head Football Coach-"What we try to do is build step by step day by day. That is how we view our success. We try to make things better that the day before. That was how it was for our middle school program last year. We are going to build off of that. And go as far as that philosophy will take us."
The Mustangs kick off the season Thursday, August 28 on the road against the Knox City JV.
Their first home game is the following week on Friday, September 5th against Paint Creek.
