Nocona boys basketball coach J.D. Mayo just wrapped up his 38th year as a head basketball coach. He's coached teams to over 700 wins. While the team successes he's enjoyed are meaningful, it's the personal relationships he cherishes the most. His players often disliked him during grueling practices but they always respected him. And usually years after playing for him developed a fond appreciation for his discipline. Arguably the best player to ever come out of the Dallas school system is Larry Johnson. Johnson played for Mayo at Dallas Skyline and Wednesday paid a visit to his former coach in Nocona.
The NCAA and NBA great spoke to an auditorium full of Nocona students. Johnson is being inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday.
