The rider baseball team has a problem. Their coach is no good at flipping a coin. For two consecutive playoff series rider coach Scott Green has needed to win a coin flip to decided whether the Raiders were going to play one game to advance, or a best of three series. Each time, coach Green has guessed wrong. But each time, the raiders have advanced. So maybe coach green doesn't need that double sided coin after all.
After two straight coin flip losses. And two straight playoff wins. Rider's baseball team is right where they want to be in the playoffs, playing a three game series with the second game taking place at their home field. And thankfully coach Green's coin flipping days are over for now. "i didn't have to work on that coin flip this time. I need to get a two headed quarter or something i'm not too good at those things."
But what green and the raiders are good at is winning. Especially in the one game playoffs they have been thrown into...Shutting out Chisholm Trail 10-0. And advancing against Granbury after beating the pirates 6-2 on Saturday. One thing that the raiders haven't yet been able to showcase is their depth on the mound. Which according to coach Green will be on full display in their series against Birdville. "i think it helps to know that not only do we have Austin but we have Pewenofkit, and Jordy. And two lefty's in Alec and Zach that can come in. I feel like we have a lot of depth. In a one game series you don't really get to show that depth very much. And as well as Austin has pitched the last couple of times we haven't really needed to have that depth."
Austin Hagy has started both playoff games for the Raiders. Pitching a five innings in a shutout in the first game, and only allowing two runs in 6 innings in the second game. So has he felt the pressure in his two one game playoff starts. "it's just another game. It's really no pressure at all. I just go out there and do my best. If i can't get it done then i know we'll bring someone else in."
And just as effective as Hagy is rider's David Pewenofkit, a Murray State College commit that has been a key starter for Rider on the mound this year as well as coming on in relief. But the question is, is Pewenofkit worried that his coach will have to flip another coin in the playoffs, "no not at all. It happens. I mean it's fifty fifty so we'll let him off the hook"
Rider's next game will take place in Birdville on Thursday night, with the raiders finally coming home on Friday for game two of the series.
