Team of the Week May 15th, 2014: Archer City Wildcats Baseball

- Just like last week's team of the week, this week's honorees pulled off a big upset to pick up the award.
Jermaine Ferrell reports from Archer City and talks to the Wildcats baseball team about their major upset win in the baseball playoffs.
Last Friday night in Fort Worth, the Archer City Wildcats sent shock waves through the Class A baseball playoffs.
The Cats fought and clawed their way to a 5-4 10 inning win over the 2nd ranked Bosqueville Bulldogs to advance to the regional quarterfinals and become area champs.
Archer City head baseball coach Wes Johnson had some words of wisdom before their match up with the Bulldogs.

Wes Johnson, Archer City H.S. Head Baseball Coach-----"You know after we won our first playoff game, I knew who we had to face and basically I told them that if you do not believe you can win then we do not need to practice. From the moment, I told them that, not one time did I or the team didn't believe we were going to win. And during the game when it was close, it is a belief that they have taken on that we are going to win and they have bought into it."

Kelvin Green, Archer City H.S. Senior Shortstop---- "We came off the win on top of the world. It was an awesome win. We all relived it through our heads all weekend and we keep playing it in our heads. Like coach told us we are going to have to come back down to earth. Go back to work today and the next day until Friday and to get ready to play Valley Mills in a series.

There is one thing that has helped the Cats in their playoff run and that is the improvement in one important part of their game.

Johnson------"I think in the field we have improved a ton. Early in the year we were making a lot of errors. We have cut down on our errors. Just making routine plays that is where we really improved."

With the great tradition of Archer City baseball, the Cats would love to go further and make a run to Austin and bring home championship gold.

Green--- "It would be something that none of us have got to experience. I don't even think there was a manager on these state teams. It would be great but we have to take little steps one by one and play each game one at a time."
