Team of the Week May 29th, 2014:Iowa Park Hawks Baseball

- The Iowa Park Hawks baseball team advancing to the 3A Region 1 Finals was interesting to say the least.
What started off as a 3 game regional semifinals series with the Perryton Rangers in Snyder became something completely different for the Hawks.
Michael Swenson, Iowa Park H.S. Head Baseball Coach----"First of all the kids handled it better than I did. I am running every scenerio through my head. This could happen. That could happen. They stayed the course. And they didn't panic at all."
Westyn Swenson, Iowa Park H.S. Junior Outfielder/Pitcher-------"It was crazy and fun at the same time. We were with each other the whole time. We were on the bus cracking jokes. Getting prepared. It was a long day but i think we were ready for it."
Here's what was supposed to happen. The Hawks and Rangers were scheduled to play game one last Friday with game two and the if necessary game three on Saturday in Snyder.
But heavy rains forced the series to be moved to artificial turf baseball field in Hermleigh.
The game began Friday night at 10:20, because of weather and a previous doubleheader on the field.
When Iowa Park and Perryton started their late night game, they could only get through 1 and half innings when, you guessed it, storms rolled through the area to push the game to the next day.
It now went from a three game series to a one game playoff.
The postponement worked to the Hawks advantage.
Iowa Park was down 2-0, but turned things around on Saturday.
Westyn---------"I guess weren't there. It was blessing. We got to postpone it to Saturday. We came back up but we put four runs up in the 1st inning. We were ready to go and ready to book it."
Coach Swenson-----------"We had three error in an inning and a half. I do not think we have had three errors in the entire playoffs. It was good to see us bounce back on Saturday. The kids were excited and real fired up and excited. They knew that it was win or go home. They showed up and we couldn't be more happier with their attitudes about it.
That 6-2 win over Perryton in the regional semifinals carried over to Wednesday night's first game in the regional finals against Lubbock Cooper.
The Hawks dominated the Pirates in an 11-1 5 inning win.
Putting them one step away for state for the first time since 2001.
