Junior Kole Weldon honored by USTFCCCA as Regional Field Athlete of the Year
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior thrower Kole Weldon was honored today by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as the Mountain Region Men’s Field Athlete of the Year.
Weldon, a reigning All-American in the shot put, was pivotal in the Red Raiders’ Big 12 Championship team title scoring 24 total points en route to earning High Point Scorer honors for the meet. The Jacksboro, Texas native finished runner-up in each the shot put, discus and hammer throw. He went on to qualify for the NCAA Championships in both the shot put and discus at the NCAA West Preliminaries in Arkansas.
“It’s an honor to be named the Mountain Region Athlete of the Year,” Weldon said. “I’m proud to be a Texas Tech Red Raider and to have the opportunity to continue to represent my team and school at a high competitive level.”
Weldon is making his third appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships where last year he became the first Red Raider in program history to earn First Team All-America honors in the shot put outdoors. Weldon also earned All-America honors in the shot put at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships as the runner-up in the event.
Weldon is the only Big 12 athlete to earn All-Conference honors in each the shot put, discus and hammer throw in two consecutive outdoor campaigns.
