All the teams in the CRAFL are non-profit organizations. So teams like Novice, will hold fundraisers, seek sponsorships, and grants to fund the team.
Jason Walker, the owner and Head Coach, said he saw a need and a want for a semi-pro team in Central Texas.
Walker use to play for a semi-pro team in Amarillo. He would drive five hour one way to attend home games.
Walker saw the need to start a team centrally located for athletes, which is why he thought Novice would make a good location.
It will allow athletes from Abilene, Brownwood, Coleman, and surrounding areas to be apart of a football team.
At their practice on July 6th, Walker said they had around 30 players show up, but they are always looking for more.
One athlete, Juan Salazar, said he hadn't played football since 2007, but it was something he loved doing. So Salazar spoke to Jason and decided to come out to the practice.
Salazar said he is happy to be back out on the field playing a game he loves. But he will definitely be sore tomorrow.
The name of the team is the Central Texas Warriors. Walker thought the name was appropriate because of their central location.
Walker says he is excited for the season to start, but he is also excited to bring communities together. He says that being able to offer the opportunity for people to watch their sons, grandsons, or fathers play football is what the team is all about.
The season will start in February. If anyone is interested you are asked to contact Jason Walker at (325) 726-8255 or email him at CTXfootball@hotmail.com. General information is also on their Facebook page, Central Texas Football.
